Using Twitter For
Marketing
This is an introduction to the micro blogging
platform called twitter.
This fascinating social site gives you a page
similar in some senses to My Space or Facebook.
This page however allows you more to chat than
to post.
You have two lines to say your piece - that's
all.
What makes it fascinating is the follow system.
Just as you make friends on MySpace, so you
follow people on Twitter. Once you are
following them, you can see what they write on
your page, everything is public like a
blog.

Some people say twitter traffic
is like a no cost Adwords. Except that
people who just advertise there
rarely stay followed.
What is really fun is that most people you
follow, follow back. As there are a whole bunch
of marketers there, this means that you can
gain some insight into these people as -
people. They talk of taking their kids to
school and listening to music, of eating
chocolate cake and watching a
sunset.
They talk to each other so it's a little like
eavesdropping on gossip and they are more
informal so you get their
personalities.
When the follow is a two way street, you can
also send them a message. I love twitter, in
many ways it wastes my time and in others it
just makes me feel part of a community of like
minded people. Let's face it, most of us who do
marketing can raely talk marketing to normal
people like our family and friends. You can see
their eyes glaze over as you
speak!
There is a
blog plugin which is very cool called
tweet my blog. Once set up
it will send a link to twitter with your
latest blog post. Using tweet my blog you
can instantly post a backlink as well
as notify all your followers about your
new blog post. Likewise, you can place a
widget on your blog to display your
"tweets"!
So twitter is definately for marketers. Maybe
it won't be a web promotional tool for you and
maybe it will. There are many plugins now and
related sites that help you use it. You can
tweet from a mobile phone by
text.
To start off with though, it can be a little
hard to "get". So if you need some help maybe
