SEO
Rankings
SEO is short for search engine
optimization and rankings are applied by
search engines to every web page they list in
their index. To get some idea of how many that
is, next time you search look up near the bar
where it says 10 results of 1,000,000 or
whatever. This figure is only for the topic you
searched on, imagine multiplying that by all
the words in a big dictionary and you will see
that there are a lot of pages on the web.
It seems like when you type in a keyword
into the box on Googles search engine that the
millions of pages on the web are all there to
be searched through and that Google psychically
finds a page that answers the question you have
asked or has information about the topic you
typed in.
In fact Google only searches those pages
which it has indexed and durng the indexation
process a mathematical algorthm is applied to
factors on the page that rank that page for
importance. If it is highly ranked it will
appear in the first few pages and the rest of
the thousands of pages are also accordingly
ranked and displayed in decending order after
that.
It's fairly obvious then that to get any
traffic from a search engine for free, you need
the description of your site to be indexed by
the search engine, to be ranked highly so it is
on the first page if possible and to display
for a specific set of keywords that will appeal
to people using these words to search for
information.
This is the basic principle of search engine
optimization.
Getting into the
Index
The first step for being indexed is to make
certain that what is indexed is something that
will appeal to people and make them want to
click your ad. This is done in the meta
information of the page which is written on the
html side of the page and is not visible on the
page itself. The page title will go between
title tags and the description between
description tags. Meta keywords can also be
entered here, but these are not displayed on
the search engine results page, although they
are considered by the indexation
robot as an indication
of which
keyword you would like your
page to be indexed
for.
Making a Google sitemap and submitting it to
Google is one way to get indexed. The same goes
for other search engines and they should not be
ignored as their traffic may well be different
to Googles. Gaining a link to your site from a
site which is indexed will often lead the robot
to your site. Once there it will set about
indexing your site. A free blog on Blogger is a
way to do this. Write an article about your new
site on the blog and link to your new site,
this is often enough to be indexed quite
quickly.
Getting Onto The First
Page
Getting on the
first page is a little harder. Especially if
you want to be on the first page for a keyword
which a lot of other sites are competing for.
This is where you need to concentrate on seo
rankings. Picking a key phrase with less
competition is easier to rank for than a
general term such as
books.
For example "books on skate
boarding" will be easier to rank
for than just "books".
The on page
optimization will not help you much for seo
rankings. To rank for a keyword phrase you have
to prove to the Google bot that other people
think you are worth reading. This proof is
shown by the number of external sites that are
linking to the page you want to rank for. Ways
to do this are by submitting articles to other
sites, entering your site in online
directories, links from external blogs, and
links from ecternal
sites.
SEO
rankings are shown by page rank. From 1-10 with
10 being the highest, the number of links
pointing to your site give you a page rank that
varies according to how many there are and
whether they are themselves from high ranking
sites. A page rank of 1 can be achieved with
only a few links so long as a page on your site
is aiming for a low competition phrase. A page
rank of 2 requires around 100 links and a page
rank of 3 around 300 while 4 may be achieved by
around 600. No one knows exactly except Google
themselves and they are not telling, as there
are other variables for seo rankings that are
factored into the
rank.
Picking the Right
Keywords
Picking the right keywords for
a page is hard to
guess.
Luckily there are tools that help you to
decide what keyword combinations to pick.
Visit
http://www.freekeywords.wordtracker.com
to use their
free keyword tool. Enter a keyword or key
phrase and it will show you the wording of
actual searches that have been done. From this,
you can choose to title your articles, use
these keywords in your articles and anchor your
links with them. These three things show the
search engine this page should be displayed
when this phrase is typed into the search
boxes.
As
you add a range of articles to a site, certain
words are repeated often. If your site is
about netball, the
word netball will probably appear on
every page on your site. If the links pointing
to your site also show the word netball then
your site will start to rank more effectively
for this keyword in phrases because of the site
authority factor. Authority is given to a site
as opposed to a page which is given page rank,
but the two are added together for the page
rank total. By downloading the Google toolbar,
you can see the page rank displayed on a green
bar for any site you
visit.
